Common DAT Exam Trap: Do not confuse peak intensity with molecular mass. A molecular ion peak may have low abundance if the radical cation easily fragments, but its $m/z$ value remains equal to the parent compound's molecular mass.

2. Molecular Ion ( $M^{+\bullet}$ ) versus Base Peak

Distinguishing between the molecular ion peak and the base peak is critical for DAT spectrum interpretation.

Because the acetylium cation is exceptionally stable, it forms in high concentration, producing the base peak at $m/z = 43$ .

Alkylbenzenes readily undergo benzylic cleavage because the resulting benzylic cation is resonance-stabilized. Benzylic loss of a hydrogen atom ( $\ce{\cdot H}$ ) produces the benzyl cation ( $\ce{C7H7^+}$ , $m/z = 91$ ), which rapidly rearranges to the aromatic tropylium cation ( $\ce{C7H7^+}$ ). This signal at $m/z = 91$ is a classic diagnostic signature for alkylbenzenes on the DAT.
