Mission Statement
The mission of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine is to improve oral health through teaching, research and service; teaching a new generation of clinicians to deliver oral health care with skill and compassion, research that expands the boundaries of our knowledge, and service to the diverse community of patients who entrust themselves to our care.
Combined Degree Programs
- DMD/PhD in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences
Students pursue the programs sequentially rather than concurrently; requires separate application and an essay explaining interest in both fields.
- DMD/MS in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences
A dual degree option focused on research training in oral biology and craniofacial sciences.
- DMD/MPH
Concurrent program with the Graduate School of Public Health allowing students to earn a Master in Public Health.
International Student Programs
Other Paths:
- International Advanced Standing Program (IASP) - A minimum 2-year program for non-CODA accredited international dentists to earn a DMD; begins in May with intensive didactic and preclinical courses.
- Dental Assistant Pathway - International dentists with valid work visas can work as dental assistants at the school to improve their application to advanced standing programs.

Clinical Experiences
A four-year, competency-based curriculum integrated with four fundamental threads: professionalism and ethics, person-centered care, integration of sciences, and evidence-based care. Patient care begins in the first year and progresses in complexity through Comprehensive Care Modules (CCM).

- SCOPE II - A required two-week rotation in the fourth year providing care in underserved community areas.
- Comprehensive Care Modules (CCM) - Multidisciplinary clinics functioning like private practices where students manage patients under team leader oversight.
