Reading Tables of Standard Reduction Potentials

Standard potential tables list half-reactions strictly as reductions in order of decreasing reduction potential. The species at the top left of the table have the highest affinity for electrons, whereas species at the bottom right have the greatest tendency to release electrons.

Identifying Strongest Oxidants and Reductants

To rank oxidizing and reducing strength from standard reduction data, arrange species along a standard potential ladder. Species with higher standard reduction potentials act as stronger oxidants, driving spontaneous electron transfer from species lower on the ladder.

A large positive value means a strong pull, so the species on the left of the top row is the strongest oxidising agent listed. Reading down the table, the pull weakens, which means the species on the right of the bottom row is the most willing to give electrons away and is therefore the strongest reducing agent. The zero is a convention: the standard hydrogen electrode is assigned exactly zero volts and everything else is measured relative to it, so these numbers are comparisons, not absolute energies. A practical rule falls straight out of the ordering: an oxidising agent on the left can oxidise any reducing agent that appears lower down on the right.
