The Shared Dimension

Two panels, one number in common

Each view keeps two of the object's three dimensions, as the last topic established. Line up any two views and something follows immediately: their pairs overlap in exactly one place.

Two pairs drawn from three numbers cannot miss each other, and cannot overlap twice. Every pairing shares one dimension, never zero and never two.

Top and front share width. It runs across both panels, so the two outlines begin and end at the same left and right limits. Whatever the front view turns out to look like, it is exactly as wide as the top view.

Exact, not approximate

The sharing is not a rough resemblance. The two panels are projections of one solid, so a shared dimension is the same edge of the same object measured twice. Check it on generated items and the two figures agree to the last decimal, every time, at every difficulty.

That exactness is what makes the two given panels sufficient. The missing view needs two dimensions; the two views you are given record two dimensions each, and between them they always cover all three. Whichever view is withheld, both of the numbers it needs are already sitting on the page in front of you — one of them twice.

One thing does not survive the transfer, and it is the thing your eye reaches for first.

Those are the two given panels of the same object, drawn the way an item draws them. Each panel is fitted to its own box independently, so the two are not on a common scale. The shared depth — the height of the top panel, the width of the end panel — comes out about 30% longer in the end panel than in the top panel. Same edge of the same object, two different lengths on your screen.

So transfer ratios, never lengths. Within a single panel, sizes are honest: that panel was drawn all at once at one scale. Compare a panel's two dimensions against each other and you get a number that survives the move to the next panel:

In the top panel, depth is about seven-tenths of the width.
In the end panel, height is about three-quarters of the depth.
Depth is the dimension those two panels share, so the statements chain: height is three-quarters of seven-tenths of the width — a little over half of it. Two independently sized drawings, now speaking in one unit.

The shared dimension is what makes that legal. It is the common unit that lets two independently sized drawings be spoken about in one sentence. A ruler laid across two panels tells you nothing; a ratio taken inside one panel travels anywhere.

The teaching figures in this lesson are normalized to a single scale on purpose, so you can see the alignment. The top-front-end practice generator is not, and neither is the test. Build the ratio habit there, where it is the only thing that works.

The takeaway

Any two views share exactly one dimension: top and front share width, top and end share depth, front and end share height. The sharing is exact, because it is one edge of one object projected twice — which is why the two given panels always carry both of the dimensions the missing one needs. What the sharing does not give you is a ruler: the panels are drawn at whatever size fits their boxes, so measure ratios inside a panel and carry those across, never screen lengths.
