Training Angular Acuity

One skill decides this section: the smallest difference in degrees you can call correctly, over and over, without guessing. Everything here is about measuring that number and moving it.

What you are actually training

Every item comes down to the same question asked several times: of these two openings, which one is wider? Answer that reliably and the ranking assembles itself. Answer it wrong once and the whole ordering is wrong, however careful the rest of your work was.

So the thing to train is not "angle ranking". It is the narrowest gap you can still call — your threshold. You have one right now. You have almost certainly never measured it, and you cannot practice against it until you do.

None of this is a claim about eyesight. It is a judgment, not a fixed property you were issued at birth, and it is not something you fix by staring harder at one item — it improves by making the call many times and finding out immediately whether you were right. What the course can hand you is the useful part: where your calls start failing, and unlimited items at that separation.

Find your threshold

Six pairs below, from a wide gap down to the narrowest the course draws. For each one, decide which opening is wider before you reveal the answer, and commit — point at it, say the number out loud. A judgment you did not commit to cannot be scored, and scoring is the whole point.

Which opening is wider? Pair 1 of 6

Pair 1

16° apart. #2 is wider: 68° against 52°. Sixteen degrees is the widest the easy band ever draws two neighbors. If this one was not immediate, the problem is not acuity.

Pair 2

9° apart. #1 is wider: 121° against 112°. Nine degrees is the tightest the easy level ever draws two neighbors, so this is the floor of easy.

Pair 3

8° apart. #2 is wider: 82° against 74°. One degree tighter than the last pair, and the ceiling of the medium band — the widest gap a medium item ever gives you.

Pair 4

4° apart. #2 is wider: 39° against 35°. Four degrees is the floor of the medium band. Call this one reliably and every medium item is inside your range.

Pair 5

3° apart. #1 is wider: 99° against 96°. Three degrees is the ceiling of the hard band — the widest gap a hard item will ever hand you. If you got this one but felt you were guessing, score it as a guess: a right guess is not a call.

Pair 6

2° apart. #1 is wider: 143° against 141°. Two degrees is the floor of the hard band and the tightest separation this course draws. Being unable to call it today is a reading, not a verdict.

The pair where your calls turn into coin flips is your threshold. Read it with one caution: these pairs are drawn clean — both openings at the same orientation, both on rays of the same length — so they isolate separation and nothing else. Real items add the ray-length and orientation noise you met earlier in this unit, so expect your working threshold on live items to sit wider than the number you just got.

The difficulty setting is a separation setting

The three levels in the practice generator are three bands of that same gap. Neighboring angles in a set are drawn this far apart:

Those are this course's numbers — a training ladder, not a published specification of the real items. That is exactly what makes them useful: the rungs are known, so you can put yourself at a chosen separation on purpose instead of hoping the next set is the one that stretches you.

Drill at the edge, not inside it

Most practice happens in the comfortable band, because comfortable practice feels productive. It is not. A set where every comparison is obvious trains only the mechanics you already have, and a set where every comparison is beyond you trains nothing either — feedback cannot sharpen a judgment you never really made. Work one rung out from where you are solid: if easy sets are clean, medium is your level; if medium sets are clean, hard is.

Calibrate on the degrees, not on how it felt

Answer any practice item and the explanation prints the true size of all four angles in ascending order. That line is the instrument — read it every time, including on the items you got right.

What you want from it is the size of the gap you fumbled. Swapping two angles 3° apart is a threshold event: you were at your limit and lost. Swapping two that were 11° apart is a lapse of method, and drilling narrower separations will not touch it. The two misses look identical on a score sheet and mean opposite things.

Move up on accuracy, not on familiarity

Familiarity arrives well before competence. After a few sets the items stop feeling strange, and that feeling is not evidence of anything. Use accuracy instead: a workable rule is two consecutive sets of ten at eight or better before advancing, and a drop back down after two bad sets in a row. Dropping back is not a setback — it puts you beside your threshold again, which is the only place progress happens.

Speed is a symptom, not a target

Nobody ranks four angles faster by deciding to hurry. A comparison you can make confidently takes almost no time; one you cannot make hangs, and you look, doubt, look again. Time on this section is mostly time spent re-checking calls you did not trust. Push the threshold and the re-checks disappear on their own.
