Ray Length Is Not Angle Size

Every ray gets its own length

Ray length in this section is not decided once per angle. It is decided once per ray. The two rays of a single angle are drawn independently, which means they are almost never the same length as each other — a lopsided angle is the normal case here, not a special one.

The lengths are drawn from a fixed range: every ray in this course's items runs somewhere between 30 and 62 units out from its vertex. Put the extremes together and one ray of an angle can be 2.07 times its partner. That is enough to tilt the entire visual weight of a figure to one side without moving its opening by a single degree.

The tip-gap trap

Faced with an angle and no protractor, the eye reaches for the thing it can actually see: the distance between the two ray tips. It feels like a measurement of the opening. It is not one. The gap between the tips grows with ray length just as readily as it grows with the angle, and the two effects are indistinguishable once the figure is drawn.

Which makes the following pair possible:

Angle 1 is 52° drawn with the longest rays available; angle 2 is 74° drawn with the shortest. The smaller angle's tips end up about half again as far apart as the larger angle's. A tip-gap judgment here does not merely lose precision — it returns the wrong answer with confidence. A long-rayed small angle beside a short-rayed large one is the engineered near-miss of this section.

It is also not a rarity you can wait out. Ranking a whole row by tip-to-tip spacing gets the order wrong in roughly seven of every ten easy items, and in more than nine of every ten of the hardest ones. Even judging a single pair that way misfires on about one pair in five at the easy end and more than two in five at the hard end. On hard items it mis-calls even the widest-separated pair in the row — the smallest angle against the largest — more than a third of the time. Tip-gap ranking is not a rough method. It is worse than useless, because it is wrong more often than it is right and it feels certain either way.

The opening is identical in every state and so is its heading; the only thing changing is how far the two rays are drawn out, from a perfectly matched pair up to the 2.07× extreme. Twenty-nine percent is a large signal — and it is pure fiction. On the tighter items it is larger than any of the real differences you are being asked to rank, which is how a phantom can end up outvoting the evidence.

The fix is where you look, not how hard

The instinctive response to a figure that fools you is to look at it harder. That does not work here, because the illusion is not a failure of attention. It is a consequence of which part of the figure you are reading. The tips are the worst possible place to look: they are exactly where all the length variation has accumulated. Near the vertex, none of it has happened yet — the rays have barely started, and what you see there is the opening and nothing else.

So the correction is positional. Move your eye to the vertex and ignore the outer reaches of the rays entirely, including the temptation to notice that one ray is long.
