2. Polymerization: Dehydration Synthesis

Polymerization is the process of connecting monomers. In biological systems, this occurs through a specific reaction called Dehydration Synthesis (also known as a Condensation Reaction).

Mechanism:

One monomer provides a hydroxyl group (-OH).
The other monomer provides a hydrogen (-H).
These combine to form water (H₂O), which is released.

Depolymerization is the breaking down of polymers into monomers. This is the primary mechanism of digestion.

The water splits into -OH and -H.
The covalent bond between monomers is broken; one monomer takes the -H, the other takes the -OH.

The Lipid Technicality

Are lipids polymers? Generally, NO.

While lipids (like triglycerides) are formed via dehydration synthesis, they form Ester Linkages between glycerol and fatty acids. However, they are not considered "true" polymers because they are not composed of a long chain of repeating, identical (or similar) subunits. They are considered macromolecules, but not polymers.

1. The "Water Math" Question:
If a scientist synthesizes a polypeptide chain consisting of 50 amino acids, how many water molecules were released during this process?
Answer: 49. (Logic: To link N items in a straight line, you need N-1 connections. 50 amino acids require 49 peptide bonds. 1 bond = 1 water molecule).

2. Metabolic Water:
Desert animals (like kangaroo rats) can survive without drinking liquid water. Based on polymerization logic, how is this possible?
Answer: While the Electron Transport Chain produces the majority of "metabolic water," the synthesis of fat stores (triglycerides) and glycogen also produces water via dehydration synthesis. Conversely, breaking down these fats releases energy but consumes water.

3. Enzyme Specificity:
